DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Reports to Project Director and works with the entire facility to ensure fire safety in active work areas at BRC.

  • Ensures that all fire and life safety systems and related equipment are fully functional and code compliant. He/she will ensure that fire drills are conducted, as required, participating in drill execution as needed, and to identify and address potential or actual weaknesses in response time or fire and life safety systems and related equipment.
  • Develops, maintains and implements all Fire Safety Plans and Emergency Action Plans, including building specific fire drill and evacuation procedures and Building Information Cards, in accordance with the NYC Fire Prevention Code. He/she will also maintain all fire records and logs as required by relevant codes.
  • Works closely with Project Director and others to develop and provide recommendations for building fire and life safety emergency systems for all capital construction projects, including new construction and renovations.
  • Assists in the interpretation of codes, regulations and City/State fire and safety policies and help ensure their implementation.
  • Supervises plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the work of other Fire Safety and EAP directors and establishes performance requirements and personal development targets; regularly monitors performance and provides coaching for performance improvement and development.
  • Responds to all building fire alarms and emergencies while on duty and is the primary interface with FDNY.
  • Oversees the Fire Alarm System Maintenance and Fire Extinguisher Vendor contracts and consults with them on day-to-day operational issues, as necessary.
  • Position is considered "essential personnel" and is required to provide administrative, management, individual support and various other duties, as required, during and outside normal working hours and duties associated with emergencies, and scheduled and unscheduled events.
  • Manage other facility related projects under the supervision of the Project Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:        

A minimum of 5 years' experience in firefighting, or equivalent fire safety/fire prevention experience in an urban setting. Bachelor's degree preferred. Must be able to effectively collaborate with fire safety personnel in local, state, and federal agencies, as well as with BRC administration, personnel and clients. Candidate must have, or be immediately eligible for the Certificate of Fitness as a Fire Safety Director, and within a 90 day period, must pass the Fire Safety Director on-site test at a location to be determined by BRC. Candidate must also be qualified and obtain necessary qualifications to ensure on site compliance to Emergency Action Plan. Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain necessary certifications as required by federal, state and local laws. This includes appropriate Certificates of Fitness for NYC facilities.
